Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera vs Frank Mir Predictions and Fight Breakdown

These two meet in the culmination of the Ultimate Fighter series. I think you need the background info though on the heavyweight class saga that took place over the last year and half.

Randy Couture had owned the “real” heavyweight belt after beating Tim Sylvia, but then was stripped of the belt after Couture resigned from the UFC and had a year long legal battle over compensation issues. So the UFC put Tim Sylvia vs Noguiera in a bout for the interim title and Nog won via guillotine choke.

One year later, last month, Randy Couture came back and faced Brock Lesnar and lost. Brock Lesnar is now the true Heavyweight Champ and this fight between Mir and Noguiera will be the second half of a 4 man tournament. The winner of this fight will face Brock Lesnar for the title and the loser will likely face Randy Couture.

Ok so if the fight between Mir and Nog goes to the ground, Noguiera doesn’t have to worry so much. On his feet, Noguiera doesn’t provide much of a threat to Frank Mir though. Mir has the advantage on the feet, imo (slight). Mir hasn’t had to gut out a fight since pre-motorcycle crash where he beat the overhyped (at that time) Wes Sims @ UFC 46. This was the UFC where Randy Couture got his eyelid sliced before any action could happen by Vitor Belfort and its ruled a TKO.

Strengths for Mir
Age, Speed, MMA Fight IQ

Strengths for Noguiera
Epic fight experience, ridiculous basic submissions that somehow catch fighters even when extremely sweaty late in the fight, extremely tough and durable

I think Mir is going to want to prove to himself and his large ego that he can submit Noguiera, so this fight will end up on the ground because Nog wants it there too. However, I think the best game plan for Mir is to try to win a decision against Noguiera.

This is going to be an exciting fight to watch and I lean it towards a pick em and if the odds are at a pick em, then Nog would get my bet, however, if the odds are lopsided for Nog, I’d opt for a Mir wager.
